Start with the Handle column
Handle is Shopify’s product identity. If you change it during a bulk edit, Shopify treats the row as a different product or creates a broken import. Preserve handles unless you are deliberately creating new products and redirects.
Edit only the columns you intend to change
For title, body, SEO, price, tags, and image updates, leave lifecycle fields such as Status, Published, Variant SKU, and inventory policy untouched unless that change is part of the plan.
Protect formulas and encodings
Use UTF-8 CSV files and avoid spreadsheet formulas in cells. Storeshift strips formula prefixes during upload because copied marketplace data can contain characters that spreadsheets interpret as commands.
Test before the full import
Import five to ten products first, inspect the storefront, and only then run the larger update. A small test catches image URL, variant, and formatting mistakes before they touch the full catalog.

Can Shopify CSV update existing products?
Yes, when the Handle matches an existing product and the import is configured to overwrite existing values.
Can I bulk edit images?
Yes. Product images update through Image Src rows, but the URLs must be public HTTPS URLs.
Should I change handles in a bulk edit?
Usually no. Changing handles changes product identity and can create SEO and redirect work.
